When you read a poem do you instinctively try to understand it? Instead, what you should be doing is concentrating on how it makes you feel. Read a poem not once but twice and then read it aloud and experience the surge of feelings. This may not happen always but most of the times it does. That is the essence of poetry, to be felt more than it is to be understood.
